Ampliación y sistema fotovoltaico Hotel Marqués de Riscal The Luxury Collection

Marqués de Riscal expands its hotel

Marqués de Riscal reopens its doors, with all the necessary measures for health safety, adding 18 luxury rooms and the installation of a photovoltaic solar self-consumption system in the Winery and Hotel complex in Elciego (Álava).  The initiative is part of its sustainable and energy-efficient strategy.

Hotel Marqués de Riscal The Luxury Collection, one of the Marriott International brands, designed by Frank O. Gehry, opened in 2006 becoming one of the first wine tourism hotels in Spain and an architectural icon. The architect Cesar Caicoya had already participated in the original project and now he has been in charge of an ambitious expansion that adds 18 rooms to the 43 already there. This had to meet the environmental requirements of the European directive 20-20-20. To this end, the new rooms have been designed with recyclable materials that also reduce the hotel’s energy consumption. The challenge was not to overshadow, dampen or diminish the architectural brilliance of the main building. The result is a modern, respectful extension that celebrates the work and design of the Canadian architect.

In addition, Marqués de Riscal cooperated with Iberdrola to find a self-consumption system in line with these requirements. The self-consumption system carried out by the energy company, together with Bikote Solar, consisted of the first phase installation of 312.3 kWp, distributed in a total of 961 photovoltaic solar panels. The energy generated by the installation has been fully allocated to the hotel and will enable savings of 30% of its electricity consumption. The project thus promotes a more competitive and sustainable energy model. The intelligent solution incorporated allows knowing, in real time, the energy consumed and produced through an App and operating the installation autonomously. The project has also received aid for renewable installations for self-consumption incentivized by the Basque Energy Agency (EVE).

All this offers added value to guests, who will be able to enjoy a luxury hotel in an enviable environment, knowing that it has been designed with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind. Adding the implementation of the strict standards of the new Global Cleaning Council created by Marriott International, implementing new cleaning protocols even more demanding, as well as new technologies that increase health safety measures for guests and employees.
